Reno...Where BCS Hopes go to Die

Amazing game between then-#4 Boise State Broncos and the #19 Nevada Wolfpack. The Broncos were 10-0, while the Wolfpack were 10-1 heading into the penultimate game of the season.

If Boise State won, they would have a sure-fire chance in the BCS championship game in Glendale, Arizona (the Fiesta Bowl). If Nevada won, they would knock off a prominent #1 contender.

Fast-forward to the last couple of minutes in the fourth quarter (when I started watching the game). The score was 31-24, Broncos. The Wolfpack stormed the length of the field to score the game-tying TD with 13 seconds left in the game.

The Broncos then return the ensuing kickoff to their own 37-yard line (9 seconds left). Star quarterback Kellen Moore then let loose a bomb of a throw to stud wide receiver Titus Young to the 9-yard line on a post-pattern with 2 seconds left on the clock. Game over, right?

Broncos' kicker Kyle Brotzman, with 2 seconds left, MISSES the GW 26-yard field goal, hooking it wide right! OVERTIME in Reno, Nevada!

In overtime, the Broncos ended up with another fourth down at the Wolfpack 12-yard line for the lead. Brotzman, who must still be having the memory of his last miss in his head, misses AGAIN - this time, the field goal was a 29-yarder, and he hooked it wide left.

The Wolfpack then went three-and-out - but this time sealed the deal, with kicker Anthony Martinez nailing a 34-yard field goal FTW!

So much for the BCS buster Boise State playing for the National Title and wondering if they or Texas Christian University (TCU) play for the chance to be the overall #1...

Brotzman MUST be sick to his stomach right now, costing his team a chance to play in the Fiesta Bowl in 2011.
