It's the Lloyd and Floyd Show! (Top NFL Players - Week 5)

Every Monday, I shall show the top players at each offensive skill position - fantasy-style, with the percentage owned and started in parenthesis. All data is from espn.com

Let's begin:

Quarterback:
Tony Romo (72%/100%)
31/46, 406 yards passing and 3 TD's, 3 Int's; 1 rush for 9 yards
22 Fantasy Points

Since his team, the Cowboys, were trailing throughout the whole game and their ground game never truly got going against the Titans, Romo had to throw, and throw A LOT. That is why he had his career-high in passing yards, but also threw three interceptions, including a game-sealing one late in the fourth quarter. He is still a must-start every game, even with the Vikings coming up next week.

Running Back:
Matt Forte (79.1/100)
22 Carries, 166 rushing yards and 2 TD's; 0 fumbles; 2 catches for 22 yards
30 Fantasy Points

With the Bears' main quarterback out with a concussion and the backup throwing FOUR interceptions, someone for the Bears had to step up - and that someone was running back Matt Forte. He had a MONSTER first quarter, scoring 2 touchdowns - including one for 68 yards - and nearly rushing for 100 in that one quarter alone! Forte has been a top-5 back this year, and is also a must-start against the Seahawks next week.

Running Back:
Ray Rice (82.2/100)
27 Carries, 133 rushing yards and 2 TD's; 4 Catches for 26 Yards
27 Fantasy Points

Like Maurice Jones-Drew last week, Ray Rice had his breakout game this week, against the stingy run defense that is the Denver Broncos. Only 15.8% of fantasy owners did NOT start him - surprising, since he is the second-leading fantasy running back for week % of the NFL season. Rice and the Ravens face a well-rested Patriots team - the same one that was gashed by Rice during the playoffs last year:

Wide Receiver/Running Back (Flex):
Brandon Lloyd (55/88.6)
5 Catches for 135 Yards and 2 TD's
25 Fantasy Points

What a performance by the pass-first Denver Broncos and Brandon Lloyd! (funny I should be saying that, because, for their entire franchise, the Broncos used to be a run-first team.) Where was this guy when the Redskins traded for him from the 49ers? Lloyd has had an incredible start to the season (averaging 14.8 fantasy points per game), and faces a Jets' defense that has given up an average of 21.2 fantasy points per game through the air. If he is not on the waiver wire, you have to grab him ASAP!

Wide Receiver:
Malcolm Floyd (51/100)
8 Catches for 213 receiving yards and 1 TD
27 Fantasy Points

Floyd had a heck of a game yesterday afternoon in the loss to the Oakland Raiders. Both he and Gates have had great starts to the 2009-2010 NFL season for the Chargers, and that does not seem to change for the remainder of the year, with Vincent Jackson supposedly out for the season. Floyd has averaged 13 fantasy pts/game, and the Rams (their opposition next week) give up 20.3 fantasy pts/game to wide receivers - although they are playing better and better pass defense each week. If your wide receivers have a bye next week (Fitz, Steve Smith (Car), TO and Ochocinco), then he is worth a start.

Wide Receiver:
Hakeem Nicks (78.1/100)
12 Catches for 130 receiving yards and 2 TD's
25 Fantasy Points

Like in Week 1 against the Panthers, the Giants took control through their passing game - and Nicks was a big reason why. For the second game this season, he had a multiple-touchdown performance (and could have had one more TD, but was knocked out at the one-yard-line), which was a major reason why the Giants won against the Texans and their AWFUL pass-defense (gives up, on avg., 27 fantasy points/game to wide receivers). Nicks is a must-start against the Detroit Lions next week.

Tight End
Mercedes Lewis (35.1/58.2)
4 Catches for 54 yards and 2 TD's
17 Fantasy Points

Lewis is still a threat as a #1 tight end to put up a good 9-10 fantasy points per game. He had a season-high 17 fantasy points due in part that the Jaguars were facing a TERRIBLE Bills' pass defense, and the Jags took advantage of that fact. I would not start him against the Titans, as they give up a measly 3-4 fantasy points per game to the opposition's tight ends.

Kicker
Josh Scobee (3.4/4.0)
5 for 5 on Field Goals; 3 for 3 on Extra-Points
22 Fantasy Points

It's a revolving door for kickers in this slot. This week, it's Josh Scobee's turn. He has the most fantasy points for a kicker in a single game this season with 22 - mainly because of the offense's ability to get into field-goal-range. Scobee and Lewis took advantage of the 0-5 Buffalo Bills, and it has showed.

Defense/Special Teams
(TIE)
Detroit Lions (1.8/2.5)

2 Ints for 62 yards and 1 TD; 1 Fumble Recovered; 1 Sack; and a 105-yard Kickoff Return TD
26 Fantasy Points

Oakland Raiders (0.8/1.6)
3 Fumble Recoveries; 3 Sacks; 2 Punts Blocked (1 for a TD, the other for a safety)
26 Fantasy Points

This year has been a crazy year for special teams. How is it that in Week 5 of the season, we have two of the worst teams last year LEAD the NFL in special teams/defense fantasy points? Crazy, if you were to ask me. The Raiders took advantage of the Chargers sleeping early in the game with two blocked punts in the first quarter, and the Lions led from beginning to end thanks to an all-around performance by every facet of the game - excluding running with the football. Speaking of which, did you see Ndamukong Suh run with the football after he made a tip-interception?

TOTAL Fantasy Points: 221
