BREAKING NEWS: Moss Headed to the Vikings

No, I am NOT talking about the diminutive Santana Moss, nor his bro Sinorice Moss (who is on IR). I am talking about the most popular Moss - Randy Moss, who was dealt as of 9 AM this morning to the Minnesota Vikings for a third-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and possibly more.

From This: To This:

Moss has been displeased at his contract situation this season - since it was the last year of his contract with the New England Patriots - and showed his displeasure after the week 1 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, saying that he wants to be traded during a press conference after the game. The tipping point was on Monday night, when he caught ZERO passes against the Dolphins.

I shouldn't be surprised by this deal, since Moss worn-out his welcome as a Patriot, and the Vikings were in desperate need of a wide receiver, with Sidney Rice out with a hip injury, Percy Harvin suffering from migraines and the opponents focusing so much on Adrian Peterson.

This deal gives the Patriots 8 picks within the first four rounds of next year's draft - 2 in each of those rounds - the Redskins, on the other hand, have only FOUR picks in the ENTIRE draft!

The trade also gives the young guns - wide receivers Julian Edelman and Brandon Tate and running back Danny Woodhead more playing time, but also weakens the Patriots' offense immensely, since other teams will focus their attention on Wes Welker, now that they do not have to double-team Randy Moss any more. It's a good deal for the long-term for the Patriots, but bad in the short-run this year.

On the other side, the Vikings will become that much better on offense (they were sputtering without a big-play receiver), now that Moss will be double-teamed more often. That will open up the running lane for Peterson, and give Percy Harvin that explosiveness that was lacking the first four games of the season. For the Vikings, it's a now-or-never situation, since Favre may retire after this year, so for them, the trade is GREAT in the short-term, but not so good in the long run.

Bad news for the Redskins is that we will have to face this dynamic offense on Thanksgiving weekend. Hopefully we'll come through. But what we will see is Moss twice facing the Packers and twice against Darrelle Revis; facing the Patriots on Halloween (oh, wouldn't that be spooky!) and facing Dallas and Dez Bryant - who greatly admires Moss.
